Andrea Lucy Designs has recently joined us in our city store, and we are so excited to introduce her to you in this spotlight!
"Designer. Entrepreneur. Mother. Wife. Oh, and let’s not forget Hot mess. I’m a woman who has struggled her entire life to accept her physical self (still a work in progress, but almost there) through eating disorders, weight loss surgery... You name it!"
HOW DID YOU GET INTO DESIGN?
"I always knew I wanted to be a designer.
As a child I would wrap myself up in bedsheets and pretend I was wearing a couture gown. Clothes have always had a special magic about them. Wearing a beautiful outfit transforms people. My mother was a size 28 at her largest (when I was a child in the 1990s) and she was often complimented on her outfits. She took pride in what she wore and altered clothes to suit her own individual style. I was gifted with the greatest teacher any fashion student could ever ask for. Her love of clothing and style inspired me to design my own clothes."
WHY DID YOU START ANDREA LUCY DESIGNS?
"My entire life I have been a curvy girl. I’ve run almost the entire size gamut.
From a 12 all the way to a 24. Throughout my life, I struggled to find clothing that not only fit me, but stuff that I actually liked.
I’d always wanted to be a fashion designer and as soon as I completed high school, I was absolutely elated to join Fashion School. My dreams were dashed however, as the fashion world turned out to be a horribly toxic, nightmarish place for a curvy young 18-year-old with low self-esteem and an eating disorder. Many years later, I sat by my Mum’s side as she slowly slipped away from this world on her angel wings.
Before she departed, she made me promise to follow my dreams and so I did. I honoured her dying wish and my own dreams by finally digging up the courage to start Andrea Lucy Designs."
THE BEST PARTS
"When I see a woman try my clothes on and smile, it makes my heart almost burst with pride! The biggest reward of doing what I do is seeing a woman transform right in front of me. I absolutely love seeing a woman come in with baggy jeans, a floppy shirt and an old cardigan who then walks into a change room but comes out a completely different person!
There aren’t a great deal of options for the curvy women of Australia, so it’s a real treat when a size 18+ woman can go into a shop and find something beautiful that is made just for them."
THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE
"The most challenging part of running my own business is finding balance.
I have a child with special needs and all too often I feel the guilt of pursuing my dreams. It is the hardest juggle of my life but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m raising two children and they will grow up seeing that their Mum can not only run a business... But a household, a family and a life too. My husband is incredibly supportive and he runs his own successful business, so we really don’t have a lot of spare time."
"We have an exciting new range planned for Spring, hurrah!
I am currently working on designing my first ever fabric and I’m so proud to say that it will be printed in Australia! We already manufacture locally (here in Melbourne) and we’re always looking for local suppliers to support Australian businesses.
Our 2020 Winter collection was unfortunately postponed until next year but we have a lot of beautiful samples that are sitting patiently until they can be showcased early 2021."
