This month we're shining the spotlight on the fabulous Marion Lecesne, founder of Céline Martine.
Marion Lecesne's passion for fabrics, colours, and patterns come from her "grandmères” Céline and Martine. Both mothers of four children, Céline was a seamstress and Martine is a retired artist, who sewed many pieces for her children and grandchildren.
Drawing on the inspiration from these two important women in her life, Marion Lecesne started Celine Martine - using the fusion of their two talents to handmake bespoke headbands with love. It truly is the easiest way to look amazing in seconds.
"All of my headbands are handcrafted with love by myself, in my Melbourne home studio. Simple solutions for good and bad hair days."
HOW DID IT START?
How did I become obsessed with headwear? I don't know, but I do sometimes wish we lived in the 1940s when no woman, or man for that matter, left the house without covering their head. I'm that typical person that looks at a magazine or Instagram post and asks herself why she can't get her hair or scarf to sit like the lady in the photo.
I don't see myself as a designer, I'm just an opinionated woman with taste who is not afraid to act on her intuition... And has hair that's hard to manage.
WHY DID YOU START CELINE MARTINE?
I listened to all the episodes of a podcast called "How I Built This" by Guy Raz (by NPR) and decided that I was not less smart than any of the featured entrepreneurs. Most of them didn't have all the answers when they started, they just started. So, I turned my back to a well-paying job that I loved, to start something myself, which I love even more.
THE BEST PARTS?
1. My customers.
What a privilege it is to bring joy to other women! Whether our wired head wraps are used as a fashion accessory, a religious cover and/or cancer or alopecia related hair loss, I've been able to make their day a little easier, a little happier, instilling a little resilience to their day, reminding them of their inner goddess. We all have it.
2. Contributing to a better society.
I am passionate about equality for women. We've come so far but we still have a way to go. As a small business, we donate $2 of every sale to survivors of domestic violence to ensure they can get back on their feet and create a better future for themselves and their families.
I can't wait for women to rule the world. Imagine, a majority-female government in Australia, wouldn't that be something to be proud of?
THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES
Time! Where does it go? Travel and Inspiration - I miss it! Being so far away from my family. It's hard.
It's so funny, after every collection, I tell myself, "That's it. No more!". I don't have any more ideas. And then I fall asleep dreaming of a specific fabric or a new style forms in my head and I can't wait to get out of bed the next morning and make a sample or five to get it right.
BUILT TO EMPOWER
Céline Martine is built on an empowerment model.
At Céline Martine, we believe in a world where women are free of judgement, free to pursue their true calling and free to connect with their inner goddess.
That's why we create affordable luxury headwear, so that women can focus on what's important to them and be beautiful, funny, brave or whatever else they want to be.
The Makers We partner with and employ local women to sew our turbans and headbands. The Wearers At Céline Martine we want women to be able to focus on what is important to them. Let women be talented, brave, beautiful or all three. The Future Finally, we help empower others by donating 10% of our profits to Domestic Violence survivors.
